Contemporary Modern: Design Trends of the Last Decade
Another decade has come and gone, and time marches on. This decade has seen some remarkable trends take shape. Trends with home design are no different. These past few years we’ve had almost two completely opposite trends come into focus when it comes to house plans and home design. On the one hand we have the Modern Farmhouse look. This style is very down to Earth and almost rustic. On the other hand, we have the Contemporary Modern look.
While this style was very popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s, it is now seeing a resurgence among younger homeowners. While these styles may be polar opposites in terms of the materials and methods used, one thing that I think they have in common is that they are both hailing from a simpler time. I think that is really what the trends of the past decade were trying to manifest; a return to a simpler time.
This style was first made popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s during a movement away from traditional home design and house building methods. Instead of an organic approach to home design, there was a definite shift towards the fantastic. Natural materials were out, and metals and plastics were in. Now, that look is making a comeback and we are here for it. Check out these gorgeous contemporary modern house plans!
Adeline’s Place (MEN 5191)
This Contemporary Modern House plan by award winning designer Michael E. Nelson gives you just under 1,700 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. Additional space comes from the large 2 bay garage at the front of the home. The exterior of this plan has the classic clean lines and low roof line that we all associate with a Contemporary Modern Home. While the inside of the home boasts a massive great room and master suite with a modern media room at the front of the plan.
As you approach the home, the first thing that you notice are the classic, clean lines that are the standard for a contemporary modern home. The home also has a very low roof line and features a porch that stands out from the rest of the home.
Entering the home, you find yourself in the foyer. This space gives you a great place for a drop zone and features an entryway closet that is perfect for storing hats, coats, etc. From the foyer you can make your way into the massive great room.
The great room features high boxed ceilings and a fireplace on the rear wall of the space that makes a great focal point for the room. The great room gives you a window on one side of the fireplace and an entrance to the grilling porch on the other side. The grilling porch is located on the rear of the home and is covered giving you a great place to entertain no matter what the weather might throw at you.
The kitchen is separated from the great room by a raised bar and countertop. The bar gives you seating for 4 making it ideal for informal meals and quick snacks. The counter on this side of the kitchen gives you a perfect place to clean up after the meal with the sink and dishwasher facing the great room letting you keep an eye on the comings and goings.
The breakfast room is located adjacent to the kitchen and features a space large enough for a standard table. It also features a double window that faces the rear of the home.
Moving to the front of the home, you will find the media room/ bedroom 4. This versatile space gives you loads of light from the double window at the front of the house. This room is kept private from the rest of the home by a barn door and has a large closet to help store everything you need.
Coming in from the 2-bay garage, which has a large storage space in the rear, you find yourself in the kid’s nook. This small but vital area gives you a perfect place to get rid of muddy garments and shoes with a bench with hanging storage. Adjacent to this is the laundry area making it perfect to help keep your home immaculate.
Bedrooms 2 and 3 are located on the left side of the home. Bedroom 2 features a double window that looks out onto the rear of the home and has a large closet for storage. Bedroom 3 can also be used as an office and has a small window facing the side of the home. This space also has a large closet that runs the length of the wall. These bedrooms share the hall bathroom.
On the other side of the plan you will find the master suite. The master bedroom gives you a triple window that looks out on the rear of the home and a private entrance to the grilling porch on the rear of the home. The master bath gives you both a freestanding tub and a large glass shower. Don’t forget about the walk-in closet!
